Eating Your Way Around St Kitts: Local Dishes, Dining Areas and Practical Tips

St Kitts is small enough to drive around in an afternoon, yet its food scene is surprisingly varied. You can eat a plate of stewed saltfish at a roadside stand for breakfast, have conch fritters at a beach bar for lunch and finish with grilled lobster by the water in the evening. Knowing what to order and where to look makes a big difference.

If you want a shortlist of specific places to book, a guide to the best restaurants in st kitts is a useful starting point. This article focuses on the dishes to try and the areas worth exploring, so you can also find your own favourites once you are on the island.

Dishes worth ordering

Kittitian cooking mixes African, British and wider Caribbean influences, and many dishes are built on breadfruit, plantain, coconut and fresh seafood. A few to look out for:

  • Stewed saltfish with spicy plantains, coconut dumplings and seasoned breadfruit, the national dish of St Kitts and Nevis.
  • Goat water, a rich tomato-based stew with goat meat, often served with a dumpling and popular at festivals and weekend gatherings.
  • Johnny cakes, small fried breads that are slightly sweet and usually eaten at breakfast or alongside saltfish.
  • Conch fritters, seasoned and deep-fried, a classic beach bar snack.
  • Roti, a flatbread wrapped around curried chicken, shrimp or vegetables, easy to find in Basseterre.
  • Grilled lobster, served everywhere from simple beach grills to more formal dining rooms.

For something sweet, try sugar cake, a chewy treat made from sugar, coconut and ginger, often coloured pink.

Where to eat on the island

Basseterre, the capital, is the place for local lunches. Small cafés and takeaway spots serve rotis, stews and rice-and-peas plates at modest prices, and the waterfront around Port Zante is busy when cruise ships are in port. Arrive before the lunchtime rush, as popular dishes can sell out.

Frigate Bay, a short drive south-east of the capital, is known for “the Strip”, a row of casual beach bars on the Caribbean side. It is the go-to area for a relaxed evening with music, cold drinks and grilled food, and it gets especially lively on weekends.

Further down the south-east peninsula, the beaches around Cockleshell Bay offer a quieter setting with views across the channel to Nevis. Restaurants here, such as Spice Mill, focus on long lunches and sunset dinners, so booking ahead is sensible in high season. If you have a day to spare, the ferry to Nevis opens up another set of beachfront and plantation-style dining options.

Practical tips for dining out

The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, but US dollars are widely accepted. Check whether prices on the menu are quoted in EC or US dollars, as the difference is significant. Many restaurants add a service charge to the bill, so read it before adding an extra tip.

To drink, order a rum punch, the island’s signature cocktail, or a Carib beer, brewed locally on St Kitts. Ting, a grapefruit soda, is a refreshing alternative, and a splash of rum turns it into a “Ting ’n Sting”.

Finally, plan your evenings around transport. Taxis are the usual way to get between areas after dark, and fares are generally set by route, so agree on the price before you set off. If you find a driver you like, ask for their number. Many visitors use the same driver for the whole stay, which makes late dinners at Cockleshell Bay or a night out on the Strip much easier to arrange.
